About Us
We are a research group in the school of chemistry and chemical engineering at Queen’s University Belfast. The Mills group is interested in sensors for a variety of applications in healthcare and sustainability. We have produced a library of 3D printable smart filaments that can be used to 3D print functional sensors. Currently we focus on smart filaments for FDM printing but are exploring making smart resins for SLA printing. We are working on 3D printable sensors for other analytes like carbon monoxide and VOCs.

Our filaments for 3D printing would be the first “smart” filaments brought to market. What makes our filaments smart is their unique ability to provide qualitative and quantitative information about their surroundings.
This can be in the form of detecting small molecules, such as O2, CO2 , NH3 to other stimuli like UV, heat and time. This means that these filaments can be used to make sensors for various applications. For example, the CO2 filament can be used to 3D print a thin sensor that can be used in aquaria to monitor the CO2 levels, this is a cheaper and more aesthetic alternative to the typical CO2 sensors used.
Our filaments can be used in any standard 3D printer with no need for additional nozzles or specialised equipment.
